Ray Wylie Hubbard w/ The Dead Exs & Black Pistol Fire

September 28, 2012 @ 8:00 pm - 2:00 am

RAY WYLIE HUBBARD

Ray Wylie Hubbard is one of the most well-respected veterans of the Texas music community. Having explored songwriting, screenwriting, broadcasting, and performing, few artists can match his versatility and style. His love of music and storytelling led him to enroll in the University of North Texas in 1965, where he was an English major. He spent his summers in Red River, New Mexico, where he played folk music in local bars, dance halls, and honky-tonks. It was here that he wrote his most famous tune, “Up Against the Wall, Redneck Mother”, that was most famously covered by Jerry Jeff Walker. His fans rejoiced in the return of the celebrated Texas artist after a decade and he began releasing more content than any other time in his career. Today could be said to be the busiest time in his entire career – he has branched over to writing screenplays and hosting a radio show in addition to his touring, producing, and songwriting. He hosts a weekly radio program in New Braunsfels called Roots & Branches which promotes both new and old Americana artists.

THE DEAD EXS

At the crossroads of East Houston and 2nd Avenue in NYC, The Dead Exs summon the gods of Blues and Rock & Roll recording LIVE in the studio with dp (David Pattillo) on electric slide guitar and vocals and Wylie Wirth on the skins. In July 2011, The Dead Exs were voted “NYC Artist of The Month” by The Deli Magazine. In just a year the band has released a full length debut, opened shows for The Del Fuegos renuion tour, generated buzz from blogs, been licensed by several skate and surf brands, been featured at John Varvatos Thursday Night Live in NYC, and received thousands of views on Youtube. Their single “More Stuff” is charted Top 5 on Twitter. Pattillo’s love for the upbeat raw recordings of Howlin’ Wolf and the garage rock of The Sonics inspired him to go back to his roots and record a true to life thrashing blues record. Pattiillo is a producer with a credit list from Robert Plant to Ray LaMontagne, The Black Crowes to the Beastie Boys and last year produced the Reni Lane debut for Universal Motown including the song “Place For Us” which was featured on several TV shows, remixed by a handful of electronic producers, and favorited on viral sites like Hype Machine and Twitter. Wirth has toured extensively in Europe and the US with various bands such as acclaimed blues artist Will Scott, and the Warner Bros act Sweet Lizard Illtet.

Their wild and energetic rock-and-roll sound has been described as a mix of classic southern rock and garage punk, garnering comparisons to early Kings of Leon, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Black Keys, and Clutch.
