New York City Queens, Featherface & The Handshake w/ DJ Get Low
October 6, 2012 @ 8:00 pm - 2:00 am
NEW YORK CITY QUEENS
New York City Queens is a Houston based Indie/Pop band formed in the spring of 2011 around their debut album, ‘Somewhere Different, Something New.’ Blending influences that range from early pop to contemporary modern rock, NYCQ has solidified a signature sound on their sophomore release, ‘Burn Out Like Roman Candles.’ The Queens are currently booked for an east coast tour to and from their upcoming official CMJ performance.
“The Queens mash together pretty much every type of pop imaginable, from surf-pop riffage to jangly, Elliott Smith-esque folk to ’70s-retro power pop (which brings to mind The Push Kings, for me) to shimmery dreampop to head-nodding, upbeat New Wave, and heat it up ’til it all melts and intermingles and mixes, coming out a candy-colored, thoroughly great pop-rock amalgam that’s just about impossible for a pop-song fanatic like myself to resist.
Some bands take years to hit their stride — these five kids apparently only needed 10 months or so. My hat’s off to y’all.” – Jeremy Hart, Space City Rock
In case you are not familiar, Featherface is a psychedelic rock band from Houston, Texas. They have released two very well received EPs and are currently working to promote their first full-length album, “Actual Magic,” recently released on September 1st. FF has been relentlessly playing shows and festivals all over the South, sharing bills with national touring acts such as Colour Revolt, Gringo Star, Free Energy, Elf Power, Jeremy Messersmith, Colourmusic, Ringo Deathstarr, The Coathangers, Hospital Ships, The Elected, Dax Riggs and were also showcased at the 2011 and 2012 Free Press Summer Fest in Houston. They recently released a video for their single, “I Saw You Dancing,” which has been very well received and was named the “best Houston video ever” by the Houston Press.
“What this really reminds me of is The Bends-era Radiohead…And while I know it sounds like a stretch to compare this band of youngsters to one of the most influential, unique bands of the last two decades, trust me, it fits.” – Space City Rocks

Winners of the 2011 Houston Press Music Award for Best New Act, The Handshake plays a unique blend of Indie-rock, with Radiohead sensibilities colliding with a distinctive Texas semi-country sound in a way that uniquely cleaves both sides together.
The band has played on several stages throughout the region, including Free Press Summerfest, and shared bills with Warpaint, What Made Milwaukee Famous, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, and Hanni El Khatib. Their 2011 release, American Arguments EP, can be purchased on their profile as well as iTunes.
