Sleeperstar w/ The Canvas Waiting, Gatlin Elms & The Reynolds Number
October 18, 2012 @ 8:00 pm - 2:00 am
After humble beginnings in Texas driving up and down I-35 (Dallas, Waco, Austin then repeat) the Dallas based band Sleeperstar began what they thought would be a slow and steady growing process. 200 clubs and 40 college shows later (22 states & 70,000 miles in just 18 months on the tour van affectionately named “The Washington”) Sleeperstar’s music recently went viral and made its way across the pond. From Dallas, TX to the far corners of the world, literally!
THE CANVAS WAITING
Having mastered the strikingly rare ability to craft genuine yet substantial music, The Canvas Waiting has garnered a host of loyal fans since their formation in 2005. With their first release, In Search of Beginnings, the passion and talent of singer Nathan Medina was undeniable and captivated audiences both on the album and through his convincing live performances. With the addition of Colin Campbell on guitar, and Jordan Spillane on bass, the group’s sound has matured into a collection of reflective and unforgettable melodies rooted in intelligent songwriting. For fans, The Canvas Waiting’s lyrics and themes, both deeply personal and universal, are the backbones of what separate their music from the current industry standard. Their second release in March of 2009, A Seasons Change, more than met these high expectations, giving listeners a platform to contemplate loss and growth. With this album’s unforgettable guitar riffs and driving sound, they were able to expand to reach a much broader audience than their Texas home. The concept and music for their newest release, Chasing Color, began taking shape over a year ago and represents the band’s observations and experiences during that time. Beginning in March of this year, the album began to truly solidify with the help of Grammy-winning producer Stephen Short (Augustana, Camera Can’t Lie). After months of refining and honing the message of each song, the band spent a week with Short at Sonic Ranch Studios in West Texas. Upon returning home, they enlisted the help of Austin-based producer CJ Eiriksson (U2, Matchbox 20, Blue October) to co-produce and mix the record. If A Seasons Change set the standard of intensity and depth that this band is capable of achieving, Chasing Color certainly surpasses that. With rich layers and intricate melodies, they have mastered the art of creating something that sounds both immense and accessible, giving listeners the sense that they are experiencing rather than just listening. This album is a truly relatable testament to the human condition, tackling elements of being together, being apart, and the search for joy in an imperfect world.
Mixing alternative with folk, Gatlin Elms has emerged on the indie scene with their debut album, Carry Me Home. After much anticipation and two years of trial and error, the band has truly realized their passions through the release. According to Elms (writer and front-man), “[The album] focuses on searching yourself and dealing with the nasty parts of life and its struggles.” Gatlin Elms is from Houston, TX and started in 2008 with singer/songwriter Gatlin Elms, Carry Me Home is the latest release for the band and was released on October 10, 2010.
THE REYNOLDS NUMBER
Formed in early 2011, The Reynolds Number is an Austin based quintet that has discovered a very unique blend of melodic rock and roll. Since their conception, the band has toured around Texas in support of their upcoming EP, set to be released in November of 2011. With Josh Atkins and Chris Soltani on guitars, Gabriel Elpers on bass, and Om Shankar on keys/vocals, the band has crafted its niche in the Austin music scene by using choral guitar harmonies, thumping bass, intricate percussion, and powerful vocal melodies to captivate the crowd. Their upcoming record, “For November”, is a seven track CD that truly shows the bands diverse musical influences, and its true soul, telling a story of a man simply trying to find his way again. With the record being on the brink of release, The Reynolds Number simply hopes that those listening will find some inspiration in their words and melodies.
